Revolutionary 5G broadband alternative offers up to 980 Mbps speeds with self-installation setup
In a landmark move to boost last-mile digital connectivity, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has soft-launched its next-generation Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in Hyderabad. The high-speed internet solution, entirely developed in India, is the country’s first SIM-less 5G FWA offering, marking a major milestone in the nation’s digital transformation journey.
What is BSNL Quantum 5G FWA?
BSNL’s Quantum 5G FWA uses standalone 5G technology to deliver fibre-like internet speeds wirelessly, without the need for SIM cards or extensive fibre installation. The plug-and-play gateway device can be self-installed at home or in small businesses, eliminating the need for trenching or cabling.
The service leverages BSNL’s extensive tower infrastructure, currently covering 85% of households in Hyderabad, making it one of the most accessible high-speed broadband solutions in urban India.
Blazing Fast Speeds and Low Latency
In initial performance tests, BSNL Quantum recorded:
- Download speeds up to 980 Mbps
- Upload speeds up to 140 Mbps
- Latency under 10 milliseconds
These figures rival high-end fibre broadband connections, offering users a reliable, high-throughput internet experience suitable for streaming, gaming, remote work, and smart home integration.
Affordable Plans for Households
BSNL has introduced competitive introductory pricing:
- ₹999/month for 100 Mbps
- ₹1,499/month for 300 Mbps
This cost-effective pricing model is aimed at mass-market adoption while maintaining quality of service.
100% Indigenous Innovation
Highlighting the technological breakthrough, BSNL/MTNL CMD A. Robert J Ravi stated:
“Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity. It is the first SIM-less, 100% home-grown customised 5G FWA for BSNL.”
Expansion Plans to More Cities
Following the Hyderabad rollout, BSNL plans to expand pilot deployments to:
- Bengaluru
- Pune
- Visakhapatnam
- Gwalior
- Pondicherry
- Chandigarh
These cities are expected to receive the service by September 2025 as part of BSNL’s controlled pilot phase.
Enterprise-Grade 5G Use Cases
BSNL also plans to leverage the same 5G standalone core for enterprise applications. Future services will include network-sliced, SLA-backed connectivity for MSMEs and smart manufacturing clusters, enabling industry-specific 5G deployments.
Controlled Rollout Before Nationwide Launch
The current launch is part of a phased rollout, aimed at collecting customer feedback and fine-tuning the service experience. BSNL confirmed that a nationwide commercial launch will follow after the successful pilot phase.
A Step Towards India’s Digital Future
The soft launch event in Hyderabad saw participation from BSNL’s Board of Directors, senior officials from the Department of Telecommunications, and representatives from academia and industry, showcasing a collaborative effort to strengthen India’s digital backbone through indigenous innovation.
