Samsung Electronics has officially introduced its next-generation foldable smartphones  the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 marking a strategic move to maintain dominance in the premium smartphone segment. The launch highlights Samsung’s renewed focus on integrating artificial intelligence and addressing concerns about the size and utility of foldable devices.

With increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers and Apple yet to enter the foldable space, Samsung is doubling down on innovation and AI features to capture the growing demand for premium devices.

Foldables Get Slimmer, Smarter: Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 Unveiled

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a notably slimmer and lighter build than its predecessor. Samsung has reduced the weight by 10% and the thickness by 26%, addressing long-standing user concerns over bulkiness. This new model is powered by the ultra-fast Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, offering improved performance and power efficiency for multitasking and AI-enhanced tasks.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 now comes in two variants including a new, more affordable Flip 7 FE model, priced at $899. The standard Flip 7 is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos chip, showcasing the brand’s increased reliance on internal innovation.

AI Becomes Central to Samsung’s Smartphone Strategy

Choi Won-joon, Samsung’s newly appointed Mobile President and COO, emphasized the company’s strategic pivot toward AI-powered smartphones. In his first media interview since taking office, he stated that integrating foldable form factors with advanced AI capabilities could help bring such devices into the mainstream.

Unlike Apple, which continues to develop AI features in-house with delayed rollouts, Samsung is enhancing its position by collaborating with external partners like Google. This includes embedding Google’s Gemini AI voice assistant into its new smartwatches, offering users personalized suggestions like workout locations and schedules.

Strategic Pricing Amid Global Tariff Pressures

In a bid to sustain profitability while navigating the impact of U.S. tariffs and rising component costs, Samsung has adjusted its pricing strategy. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is priced at $1,999, a 5% increase from the Fold 6, signaling the company’s continued focus on premium positioning.

However, the introduction of the more budget-friendly Flip 7 FE shows Samsung’s intent to appeal to a wider user base without compromising on its premium image.

Market Outlook: Foldables Still a Niche, But Growing

Despite technological advancements, foldable smartphones remain a niche category in the broader mobile landscape. According to research by IDC, foldables accounted for just 1.5% of the global smartphone market. While design improvements and AI integration may boost adoption, high prices and limited use cases still pose challenges to widespread acceptance.
